There is always one little baby step for everybody before mastering some skills, include having deep knowledge about Adobe Photoshop.

In this tutorial, I will guide you how to outline your texts or letters using Photoshop, especially if you are a newbie.

Giving an outline can bring up the visibility of your text. And, this is also a common way for many bloggers or web owners using this to draw attentions when using the outlined text with image as the background.

There are many ways how to do this, but this time, as my experiences I will give you 3 ways for outlining the words or texts.

Here we go.

1. Convert your text to shape

Yes. You can turn your text into shape. Now, type your word into document canvas using Horizontal Type Tool (T) or others that available. After that, right click on the text layer and choose Convert to Shape. Doing this also mean that you are now can’t edit your text such as change to other fonts and change the spaces (distances) among letters as you capable to do them when you were in the original text layer.

Now, because you just changed it to the shape. Go find the shape tool on your toolbar. This time, I simply choose Rectangle Tool (U). You can also choose the others, it doesn’t matter at all.

And, when you have selected the rectangle tool, move you attention to the option bar located below photoshop menus. There you can see the shape settings such as color fill, stroke color, stroke width and aligns, etc. Change the color of your text by clicking on the color box on the right of “fill” option, so with the stroke and others. See below image for more details.

And, this is my simple result that you too can get by using this first method.

2. Using stroke from default Photoshop menu

Hope you can follow the step above without any of confusions, and now let me show you the second way to make an outline for your text.

This time, I will show you how to do it using stroke as one of photoshop menus. Now, activate (select) your text layer. Then, press CTRL on your keyboard while pointing your cursor to the text layer icon and click on it. This is also the way how to make selection for certain shapes in Photoshop.

If you have make your selection, the text will look like this.

While the selection still active, make a new layer by press Ctrl + Shift + N on your keyboard or using “Create a new layer” option in the bottom of layer panel.

Now, you just made a new layer and keep in this new transparent layer selected. Then, go to Edit – Stroke. When the stroke dialog box appears, you can now directly customize the text outline as you need. In here, you can adjust the stroke width, change the color (only solid colors available), location of stroke (inside, center, and outside), etc. Here’s my settings for this step.

3. Outlining text using Layer Style

This is the last method that I usually using until now and for me this is even the easiest way to make an outline of text. Using this also give you more options than our two methods before.

To make an outline using layer style, just simply double click on your text layer to open it or you can right click on your text layer and choose Blending Options. There you will find the stroke option, so check the box and apply settings as needed.

From above image, you can see that the size of stroke can be set until 250 pixels, maximum. There is also blend mode option if you want to blend the outline with your background. And, what other methods do not have than using layer style is, you can apply the photoshop pattern as the outline.
